The Bardonecchia section of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) was founded in 1972 on the initiative of locals as well as holidaymakers and immediately started a considerable amount of hiking, mountaineering and ski mountaineering activity.

The Italian Alpine Club is a free national association whose aim is mountaineering in all its manifestations, the knowledge and study of mountains, especially Italian mountains, and the defence of their natural environment. The enthusiasm and voluntary commitment that have always characterised the CAI and made it an excellence in the Italian association scene, have over time allowed it to carry out a wide range of works in favour of the mountains and those who frequent them, such as refuges, bivouacs, trails and reforestation. The CAI carries on that function of catalysing the spirit of unity around an ideal that still constitutes one of the essential values of associational motivation.
