Fortifications and military works

Bardonecchia: since 1871 one of the strategic cornerstones of the Alpine defense system
Itineraries that take in the signs that history has left in the area, from centuries-old fortresses to the military works of the World Wars, for trips that combine the charm of the landscape with that of a journey back in time.
Fort Bramafam

Fort Bramafam, built between 1885 and 1894, was the most important fortification in the Cottian Alps, heir to Fenestrelle and Exilles, and predecessor to Chaberton. Since 1995, the Association for the Study of Military History and Architecture has been working to restore it, creating a museum area of over 4000 square metres that houses a museum on the history of the Royal Army, a tour itinerary that, through a series of environmental reconstructions, recounts the military history of Italy from 1890 to 1945 and a collection of historical material of all kinds: uniforms, logistical material, photographs, diaries, letters.

The Foëns Battery

The Fort Foens Battery located at an altitude of 2200 m, takes its name from the small hamlet situated a little lower down. The military structure was built between 1897 and 1899 along the southern slope of the Jafferau and was protected by an embankment and surrounded by a defence wall. The battery emplacements are still visible and in good condition, as is the ammunition room (riservetta). The surrounding casemate with the embrasures are, however, partially destroyed. At the end of the Second World War, the fort was disarmed and sold to private individuals.
